MLBA Newsletter January 2020

PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:   Missouri Limousin Breeders and family,

Well we are off and running in a new year, worn down from the recent agricultural slump, yet always optimistically looking ahead at the future with recent trade agreements and more being developed.  This winter has been very wet, yet our conditions could always be worse.  Spring is just around the corner, and spring calving season has already/soon will begin in earnest.  Regarding new calves, I would remind you on the importance of capturing and reporting accurate birth, weaning, yearling, scan data on your livestock.  A copy of the 2020 MLBA Herdbook is enclosed for your use.

Our next big event as an organization will be the MLBA Annual Meeting/Banquet and Great American Pie Sale being held in Lebanon on 17-18 April.  The Annual Banquet/Meeting will be held Friday evening 17 April.  Included is fellowship with fellow Limousin enthusiasts, evening meal (free for all MLBA members), silent auction, raffle tickets, and live auction for MLBA and MJLBA organizations, election of Officers, Commercial Producer and Hall of Fame Awards.  On Saturday 18 April, MLBA will hold a joint sale with the Heart of Missouri Limousin Association “Great American Pie Sale”.  Attached is the livestock entry form. Be sure to mark this on your calendar and make every attempt to attend.

I urge you to consider contacting TJ Callahan, 816-215-0482, and nominate your best commercial bull client for the MLBA Commercial Producer of the Year.  We were proud to have our 2019 Commercial Producer, Andy and Sandra Murray, Murray Family Farms represented at the recent National Western Stock Show.

Ty Heavin, President

2020 NWSS REPORT.  With good weather, I had the opportunity to attend the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO in January. Shane Hale, Henley, MO and I attended the NALF Annual Meeting and breakfast.  Much valuable information was relayed by Mark Anderson, and NALF President Gary Fuchs including the recent registration fee adjustment as a means to keep NALF financially solvent, as well as adjustments projected to occur in May that should correct current negative correlation between Milking Ability and Performance calculations in the BOLT EPD data system.  Many events occurred during the week in Denver including the National Sale, Annual Banquet and Fundraiser, NALJA and MLBA Open Limousin Shows, and ending with the Pen/Carload Show.  I had the privilege of talking to Patty Edge (Patty and Joel were instrumental MLBA promoters in past decades) and her son and daughter, while they were showing cattle on the Hill.

The highlight for many including myself is the time spent outside in the Yards, talking one-on-one with Seedstock Producers and their displayed bulls.  If you haven’t ever gone, be sure to put a trip to the NWSS on your bucket list.  Melanie Brockhaus (MJLBA Leader) and her husband were seen spending time in the Yards.  The NWSS is currently involved in a $1 Billion development/restoration which will completely change how livestock are showcased at their event.  Missouri’s own Mark Merideth of Merideth Limousin sat shivering in the Pen/Carload arena seating for the last year, as the new facility is now under construction to be ready for use next year.
