MLBA Newsletter September 2019

PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS:

Missouri Limousin Breeders and family,

This has been a great year for green pastures. The time is coming quickly for fall calving, breeding season and harvest.

“Limousin A League of Their Own” (NALJA Junior Nationals in Springfield, MO) was a great success. Thank you to our members and especially the State Board members who made it happen. The planning, fund raising, setting up and clean up were all a team effort. Many Missouri Junior members exhibited as well as other juniors from a total of 23 states.

The Missouri State Limousin Show had a great turnout this year also. Thank you to Pam Callahan for organizing and planning the member dinner, which occurred following the MLBA Open Show. It was a great time for members to visit and socialize. We truly appreciate Pam’s hard work.

During your Board of Directors meeting at the State Fair, Brooke Edwards retired as Junior Advisor. Brooke has spent several years leading the Juniors. We all appreciate the numerous hours spent getting everything taken care of.

The new Junior Advisor is Melanie Brockhaus. Growing up and exhibiting Limousin has given Melanie a great background of experience for this assignment.

We have a lot of positive things happening in the Limousin breed in Missouri and look for more in the future. If you have registrations to complete, please be aware that NALF registration and transfer fees will increase on October 1.

We look forward to a great fall. Make plans to get out and meet with your fellow Limousin breeders at various fall sales and events.

Ty Heavin, MLBA President

MJLBA LEADERSHIP CHANGE. After I many years, Brooke Edwards decided to step aside as MJLBA Advisor following the 2019 NALJA Junior Nationals, recently held in Springfield, MO. She is an amazing woman who cannot be duplicated. She has been extremely instrumental in the development of numerous youth in the MJLBA activities and organization over the past years. Be sure to take the opportunity to thank Brooke for her selfless, dedicated leadership.  Susie Heavin assisted Brooke for several years and will continue to assist our new MJLBA Advisor, Melanie Brockhouse. Her phone number is 660-238-3665, email: mbrockhaus@gvr5.net.

MEET OUR NEW MJLBA ADVISOR, Melanie Brockhaus

“My husband Danny and I have 2 sons Corbin (10) and Case (7). We live on a farm in Holden. Corbin has shown the last 2 years and Case just finished his first year of showing. We stay very active with our boys who are actively involved in 4-H with cattle and lamb showing, archery and livestock judging. They also play baseball, basketball and football. I teach 3rd Grade at Matthews Elementary in Grain Valley. I grew up in the Limousin family. As a Junior member, my brother Jake and I would hit the road each summer showing our heifers and bulls. Being an active Junior member, I made many friendships and that is something that I am excited for my boys to form over the years.

As your Junior leader, my hopes are to bring the Junior members together and form a bond with all members.”  Melanie

MLBA 2019 PROMOTER OF THE YEAR. During the MLBA Open Show at the Missouri State Fair, Mark Haden and his family of Buck Ridge Cattle Company, Rogersville, MO were recognized as the 2019 MLBA Promoter of the Year. Standing left to right are: Nick Haden, Whitney Byrd, Marta Haden, Harper Byrd, Mark Haden, Jenna Haden, Lincoln Haden, Logan Haden, and Josh Galloway.

Seated is Rosalie Smith, Arator Valley Farm, who supports this prestigious award. Rosalie and Tom (deceased) were the first MLBA Hall of Fame inductees and set the high standard for promotion of Limousin cattle. This award was started in 2009 and is awarded to a Missouri Limousin breeder in recognition of their active involvement and promotion of the breed. That involvement may include sponsorship, development, and/or organization of events that encourage participation by our fellow breeders and youth.
